Joe Calleja is the Principal of Recovery Matters, a mental health and suicide intervention advocacy group. He was previously the Chief Executive Officer of the Richmond Fellowship of Western Australia from July 2005 – January 2016, Principal Social Worker in Child Protection in WA and in the Senior Executive Service of the Justice Department in WA. He now undertakes consultancy with organizations on mental health and suicide intervention.
As CEO of Richmond Wellbeing, he introduced the Hearing Voices peer support approach to psychosis from Europe into Australia in 2005. In November 2015, he attended a workshop on alternatives to Suicide at the World Hearing Voices Congress in Madrid and recognised the importance of this peer support approach to suicide intervention. He has worked initially with MercyCare and now with ConnectGroups to have this approach introduced in Australia.
He is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a life member of both the Australian Association of Social Workers and the Australian College of Social Work.
